A Friendship Like No Other: Experiencing God's Amazing Embrace - William A. Barry 2008

Amazon Synopsis: Live in the love of a God who desires a relationship with you.

Throughout A Friendship Like No Other, renowned spiritual director William A. Barry, SJ, explores the premise that God wants to relate to us as a close friend. Barry has contemplated this idea—radical for many Christians—throughout his lifetime, and he explains that it actually traces back to the “developing revelation of God contained in the Bible.”

A Friendship Like No Other offers three well-supported and practical sections: prayerful exercises to help lead you to the conviction that God wants your friendship; a close look at objections to this idea; and reflections on experiencing the presence of God and discerning those experiences. Brief, personal meditations are woven throughout.

Grounded in biblical tradition and with a clear focus on Ignatian spirituality, this book offers a fresh, heart-changing approach to living joyfully in the freedom of the divine embrace.

The Cloud of Unknowing – translated by Ira Progoff 1989

Author's Quote: "The Cloud of Unknowing was written by someone who was exceedingly tough-minded in the sense in which William James used the phrase. He was most unsentimental, matter of fact, and down to earth; and he regarded this habit of mind as a prerequisite for the work in which he was engaged. He proceeded upon the belief that when an individual undertakes to bring his life into relation to God, he is embarking upon a serious and demanding task, a task that leaves no leeway for self-deception or illusion. It requires the most rigorous dedication and self-knowledge.

The Cloud of Unknowing is therefore a book of strong and earnest thinking. It makes a realistic appraisal of the problems and weaknesses of individual human beings, for it regards man's imperfections as the raw material to be worked with in carrying out the discipline of spiritual development.” - Ira Progoff

The Cloud of Unknowing is an early work of Christian Mysticism. Ira Progoff's translation brings it into the realm of modern comprehension.   Older Version PDF

Experiencing God -  Henry T. Blackaby & Claude V. King 2009

Synopsis:    Knowing God does not come through a program, a study, or a method. Knowing God comes through a relationship with a Person. This is an intimate love relationship with God. Through this relationship, God reveals Himself, His purposes, and His ways; and He invites you to join Him where He is already at work.

This is the central thesis of Experiencing God by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King. The authors' emphasis on revelation through personal relationship makes faith sound like a true adventure--leading believers to engage with people and circumstances they might otherwise have avoided. The organization of Experiencing God adds to this effect, proceeding step by step through the various ways a believer's relationship with God is deepened (via the Bible, prayer, and the Church, among others). Although there's strong tension between the self-help tone of this book and its hard-line argument that faith is purely a response to God's initiative, many readers will nevertheless find great encouragement in hearing a still, small voice among a vast number of everyday experiences.

Father God: Co-Creator to Mother God – Sylvia Browne 2006

Amazon Synopsis: In this follow-up to her marvelous book, Mother God, Sylvia gives us many insights into our often-misunderstood Father God and the viewpoints about Him. From His history as put forth by humankind in the early days of organized religion to how we view Him today, Sylvia reveals His true attributes in a logical and truthful manner to give us a better understanding of our Father in heaven. Using her uncanny psychic skills and her ability to communicate with the Other Side, Sylvia dispels many of the false and traditional beliefs about the Father God and helps us to embrace Him more deeply and fully.

Sylvia helps us see Father God in a different way . . . one in which everyone can gain a deeper understanding and love for this often-maligned Entity. If anyone wants to commune more closely with their Creator and to share His unmitigated and unconditional love, this fascinating book is the answer . . .  for it not only shows us Sylvia’s tremendous insight and love for Him, but  also tells us how we can enjoy that same intimacy in our everyday lives. In her own indomitable style, Sylvia again shows us that she goes against many conventional beliefs in presenting a God that is truly all-loving, merciful, and forgiving . . . one Whom she has dedicated her life and work to in what she would say is . . . “a labor of love.”

God and You: Prayer As a Personal Relationship - William A. Barry 1987

Amazon Synopsis: This book describes what prayer can be when seen as a conscious relationship of a person with God.

God at Eventide - Two Listeners

Synopsis: The second daily devotional book written by the Two Listeners. They say that they did not write the book, that the words were given to them by Jesus, himself. Their communication with Him began when they decided to take a scripture as a literal promise from Him - "Where two or more are gathered together in my name, I am with them." They met regularly, with this promise in mind and two books are the result, God Calling and God at Eventide.

God Calling - Two Listeners

Editor's Synopsis: There is a legend that the praise for building the Cathedral of St. Sofia was not given to the Emperor Constantine but to Euphrasia, a poor widow who drew from her mattress "a wisp of straw and gave it to the oxen" that draw the marble from the ships.  That was all, she did nothing more.

Not one woman, but two have written this book; and they seek no praise.  They have elected to remain anonymous and to be called "Two Listeners."  But the claim which they make is an astonishing one, that their message has been given to them, today, here in England, by the Living Christ Himself.

Having read their book I believe them.

I do not of course believe that He whispered to them all that He intends to say for this generation.  But I am confident that He opened their eyes to many things which they and this generation greatly need to know.

I do not believe in the verbal inspiration of this or any book.  But I do believe that these two women have been led and that much of what is written is very clear leading indeed.

I have found these messages a spiritual stimulus.  But that statement is as inadequate as to say that I like England.  None could have written this book unless he or she was a Christian and in touch with the Living Founder of Christianity.

God in Real Life: Personal Encounters with the Divine - Kevin J. Todeschi 2009

Book Jacket: I highly recommend this book to everyone who is looking for proof of the love and caring of a universal God. George G. Ritchie, Jr., M.D., Author of Return from Tomorrow and My Life After Dying What if it was truly understood that individuals can have real encounters with the Divine, even in this modern world? What might happen to our collective worldview if we suddenly realized that, in truth, there is a caring God very much concerned about each and every one of us? Presented here are personal accounts from people of all ages, races, and religions who have one thing in common an experience with the Divine. Those who experienced loss were comforted. Those who touched death no longer feared it. Those who were ill or broken were somehow healed. The stories in this book suggest that the time may have come for our 21st century world to acknowledge that there is much more to us than a simple physical body. Perhaps the time has come to acknowledge that we are never really alone.

Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God - Dallas Willard 2012

Amazon Synopsis: "God spoke to me."

"The Spirit spoke to my heart."

"God revealed the idea to me."

Being close to God means communicating with him--telling him what is on our hearts in prayer hearing and understanding what he is saying to us. It is this second half of our conversation with God that is so important but that can also be so difficult. How do we hear his voice? How can we be sure that what we think we hear is not our own subconscious? What role does the Bible play? What if what God says to us is not clear?

The key, says best-selling author Dallas Willard, is to focus not so much on individual actions and decisions as on building our personal relationship with our Creator. In this updated and expanded edition of Willard's beloved book, originally published as you'll gain rich spiritual insight into how we can hear God's voice clearly and develop an intimate partnership with him in the work of his kingdom. Including new material from Dallas Willard's teaching at the Renovar Institute and reformatted to be even easier to read, this classic continues to endure as one of today's best resources for learning to listen closely to God.

How to Know God: The Soul's Journey into the Mystery of Mysteries  – Deepak Chopra 2001

Amazon Synopsis: You don't have to believe in God in order to experience God. --- Deepak Chopra

The celebrated author of Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success has written his most ambitious and important work yet, a runaway international bestseller that has inspired hundreds of thousands of readers to rethink their concept of God.

According to Chopra, the brain is hardwired to know God. The human nervous system has seven biological responses that correspond to seven levels of divine experience. These are shaped not by any one religion (they are shared by all faiths), but by the brain's need to take an infinite, chaotic universe and find meaning in it. How to Know God describes the quest each of us is on, whether we realize it or not. For, as Chopra puts it, "God is our highest instinct to know ourselves." This book makes a dramatic and enduring contribution to that knowledge.

The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical - Shane Claiborne 2006

Amazon Synopsis: Living as an Ordinary Radical Many of us find ourselves caught somewhere between unbelieving activists and inactive believers. We can write a check to feed starving children or hold signs in the streets and feel like we've made a difference without ever encountering the faces of the suffering masses. In this book, Shane Claiborne describes an authentic faith rooted in belief, action, and love, inviting us into a movement of the Spirit that begins inside each of us and extends into a broken world. Shane's faith led him to dress the wounds of lepers with Mother Teresa, visit families in Iraq amidst bombings, and dump $10,000 in coins and bills on Wall Street to redistribute wealth. Shane lives out this revolution each day in his local neighborhood, an impoverished community in North Philadelphia, by living among the homeless, helping local kids with homework, and 'practicing resurrection' in the forgotten places of our world. Shane's message will comfort the disturbed, and disturb the comfortable . . . but will also invite us into an irresistible revolution. His is a vision for ordinary radicals ready to change the world with little acts of love.

Mother God – Sylvia Browne 2004

Book Jacket: Sylvia Browne, in her own indomitable style, again defies convention in this uniquely informative compilation of diligently researched facts and personal accounts about the premise of a female divinity-namely, the Mother God (also known as the feminine principle).

Spanning time from the earliest beginnings of humankind, when the time of the 'Goddess' was at its peak, to the current era, with its myriad beliefs and religions, Sylvia takes us on a journey of discovery, where she discusses the suppression of the 'Mother Goddess' by the male-dominated politics of modern-day religious dogma.

Using a combination of historical data and poignant and heartwarming stories revealing the power and miracles attributed to the Mother God, Sylvia leads us from the question of 'Does She exist?' to the logical, fact-based conclusion that She does . . . and then shows us how to call upon Her to help us in our everyday lives.

The Nature of Good and Evil – From the Journey of the Soul Series – Book 3 – Sylvia Browne

Book Jacket: We constantly see the "senseless violence" in our world, and it begs the question: "How can an all-loving God allow this to exist?" Indeed, many people simply reject any notion of God for this very reason. This book, the third in Sylvia Browne's Journey of the Soul series, gives you the philosophical framework to understand the nature of good and evil-and the role of God in the big picture. When you see how evil originated and why it thrives in our world, you're more prepared to face it and overcome it. Sylvia points out that you need not fear "evil spirits" or "curses"-which are merely stories bred from ignorance. And how would you like to serve as one of God's warriors of Light? Sylvia explains how to enlist!

By combining her philosophical and theological views, Sylvia creates a spiritual umbrella that rises above traditional religion. All paths that lead to knowing God have merit-Sylvia simply invites you to know Him/Her in your own way, free of dogma and fear.
